can we just remember that joan calling irene a ‘bitch’ comes directly after irene dehumanizes joan, a woman of color, as a ‘mascot’?

and yet i’ve seen twice as many complaints about joan’s misogyny than i have about irene’s racism (and hell, not even going to cut corners, racialized misogyny since it’s dehumanizing a woman of color as an object for a white man)?

wish some of y’all would take racism as seriously as you do misogyny =|

3D printing is basically the coolest and there's no one for me to be excited about it with.

The almost endless possibilities of 3D printable objects is like, freaking me out. In a good way? In a mind-blowing way. You can make almost anything. EVEN FUNCTIONING GUNS. That’s terrifyingly cool! But it’s not that people could potentially make weapons (even though that is super intriguing in a dark sort of way) it’s that this busts open the possibly of anyone producing literally anything!

Say 3D printing becomes more affordable (it’s currently around $1,300 for a personal one), and templates become downloadable online (either pirated or free or purchasable), say goodbye to needing to buy anything again ever. I could make silverware, replacement parts, plastic screws, plates and cups, containers, whatever, I’m just scratching the surface. This opens up so many questions about copy-write management and how would you ever try to prevent pirating of designs if they were downloadable on the internet. You could PIRATE PHYSICAL OBJECTS FROM THE INTERNET. Unless all 3D printers were regulated to require an internet connection that runs everything through a server that approves or denies what can be printed (that’s how computers work right) then how would it be preventable? And since it’s so new, there is no current regulation so whatevs.

Anyways, it’s like, if this were affordable, it would completely destabilize the capitalistic means of production by taking it from those select few who own it, and distributing it to anyone with access to a 3D printer. And forgive my high-school understanding of Marxism, but like, it’s the best way of describing why I think this is so cool. The more affordable, the more people would have access to it. And I’m basically just thinking along these what-if’s this happened and how it could wreck capitalism if there was wide-spread access to these unregulated machines. It could be used to completely strip ownership from those who sell certain products if people could just take the designs and print them themselves. It’s direct to user. And I don’t know if that’s even a good thing, but it sure is an interesting thing for me to think about.

Also, just the opportunities for artistry alone and whatever are cool on their own. SO MANY POSSIBILITIES. THIS IS SO EXCITING?

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

This just… hurts.

This reminds me of all the executives being hired to run YouTube networks who probably couldn’t name more than one YouTube channel.

Why are people acting like Abrams said he swore to strip Star Trek of all philosophy and ruin the show entirely for classic Star Trek fans when all he said it that it felt too philosophical for him as a kid? (Personal opinions from childhood, whaaat? Can’t have those.)

In the interview, Abrams continues to say that he didn’t like it because, “You were much smarter than I was. I didn’t get it. I want to make it for people like me, and for people like you.” And here everyone is freaking out because Abrams dares make a Star Trek movie more accessible to new fans AND give classic Star Trek fans a movie they’ll like?!

HOW DARE HE.

This semester is the first time that I’ve had to try storyboarding, and I have SO MUCH MORE RESPECT for it. The way the camera moves are planned out in this short sequence and how believable this action is absolutely astounds me. I never really thought about everything that went in to these productions. I always appreciated them, but I had no idea.

So even though I’m not sure I want to pursue storyboarding itself, this is still very inspiring.
